On Saturday morning, investigators executed a search and seizure warrant at a home in the 46000 block of Radford Lane in Lexington Park as they sought to apprehend a minor who was at large following an incident at the school.
According to the sheriff's office, on Wednesday, Jan. 17, staff members at Great Mills High School spotted four unauthorized people walking through the hallways, and after being confronted, they scattered and fled.
The incident was then reported to the School Resource Officer, prompting an investigation that led to the minor's arrest on Saturday.
"Following interviews and a review of video surveillance, (detectives) were able to identify the subjects," officials said.
"Additional investigation led to the discovery of photographs posted on a social media platform by the juvenile and depicted the involved individuals posing in various locations in the school; one photo showed the suspect potentially holding a handgun."
The minor was arrested without incident and taken to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center to be charged as an adult with weapon-related offenses.
"I applaud the professional response by school safety and security staff and the Sheriff's Office members who collaborated on this case," St. Mary's County Sheriff Steve Hall said in a statement. "This incident is a stark reminder of the challenges we are facing with our youth.
"The ease with which children, barely old enough to obtain a driver's license, can get and use weapons is simply unacceptable."
